Temporary Restraining Order Program PDF Print E-mail
At times, partner violence reaches severe heights that require legal recourse. An official court issued restraining order can be of great comfort to a victim fearing for her or his safety. However, navigating the family court system alone can be difficult and overwhelming. The North County Women’s Shelter provides domestic violence victims with a trained, dedicated Legal Advocate to help them obtain court ordered safety through a Temporary Restraining Order. The agency supplies victims with assistance completing TRO forms and paperwork, and can answer all questions surrounding the TRO process. Advocates are also available to accompany victims to legal hearings and offer comfort during stressful court appearances.

Counseling Program PDF Print E-mail

Overcoming the long lasting emotional effects of an abusive home or relationship can be a lifelong process. The Community Counseling Program offers specialized counseling for adults, teens, and children over 4 years old. Counseling services are available to all members of the community on a sliding scale fee schedule. Those seeking counseling will not be turned away due to inability to pay, or nature of emotional issue.

In addition to individual counseling, a weekly support group provides attendees with a peer centered approach to domestic violence recovery. Those attending the group explore self-esteem, self-worth, common signs of an abusive relationship, and varied methods of recovery. The support group is a completely free, confidential environment in which members are encouraged to commiserate and empathize with one another.

North County Women’s Shelter therapists also provide in-school counseling to elementary, middle school, and high school age children attending schools in Atascadero, Templeton, Paso Robles, and San Miguel. School counseling provides children who witness abuse at home, or teens who encounter dating violence, with a safe encouraging space in which to share their stories with a trained, qualified therapist. Children who are exposed to violence may encounter short and long term physical, emotional, and learning problems that affect academic and social performance. Therapeutic intervention in children’s schools through the On Campus Counseling Program serves to limit the occurrence of these problems, and break the cycle of violence -- keeping future generations safe, happy, and healthy.
